I’ve touched on things from 2009 dealing with Chris briefly in the past I personally thought he came back too soon but I understood why he did – he didn’t know what else to do with himself and despite the opposition he faced, he still had mouths to feed and a crisis to work through. You wanna know what Graffiti is about? It’s about an nineteen year old who went from being America’s budding sweetheart, Black America’s favorite little brother to a villain, the most heinous monster that will ever exist – it’s about his process in trying to register what was happening to him personally and professionally, publicly and privately. WHERE ARE THEY GETTING THIS INFORMATION?! Excuse me while I stan. SOMEONE SAID THAT GRAFFITI IS A “FACELESS ALBUM”. Someone said Chris was “exceptionally insufferable” on the record someone else described it as “thoroughly mediocre and at times just garbage” (that was the Chicago Sun-Times I’d link it but the page has disappeared – typical). In 2009, Graffiti was deemed “incoherent”. (Seriously, this is gonna be long – you’ve been warned.) Today, I say thank you, Chris Brown, for Graffiti in so many ways and words. I am an avid Chris Brown fan – a realistic one but a fan nonetheless – and I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t finally pay homage to THE quintessential Chris Brown album on its seventh anniversary. Graffiti could have had the cure to every cancer that exists on it and no one would have known because they were too busy demonizing him to listen. What people failed to realize is that he had a right to tell his story just like everyone else their desire to throw him away overrode their curiosity in what he had to say.

Graffiti is an album that tells the story of a boy who had the world at his feet, knew he had this, and royally fucked up to the point where everything was taken from him – his love, his livelihood, his legacy the only problem is no one wanted to hear his story. It’s been seven years since Chris Brown gave the world his third LP, Graffiti, and with the help of social media’s repetitive conversations surrounding music, it was brought to my attention that this album that I hold so near and dear to my heart – it’s my favorite CB album without question – is severely unappreciated by the masses and, dare I say, hated? In my household, this is unbelievable but in society it’s true Graffiti has such a bad rap and it’s unjust.
